Special Educational Needs (SEN) Policy

Introduction:
Hong Wen International is committed to providing an inclusive and supportive learning environment for all students, including those with Special Educational Needs (SEN). This Special Educational Needs Policy is aligned with the principles and guidelines set forth by the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) to ensure equitable access to education and the full participation of all learners in our community.

Definition of Special Educational Needs:

SEN encompasses a range of learning, physical, sensory, emotional, and behavioral needs that may require additional support to access and benefit from education. This includes, but is not limited to, students with learning disabilities, attention difficulties, sensory impairments, physical disabilities, and emotional or behavioral challenges.

Principles:

  1. Inclusivity: Hong Wen International is committed to an inclusive education model that values and accommodates diversity. SEN students are fully integrated into the general education setting whenever possible, fostering a sense of belonging.

  1. Individualization: Recognizing that each student is unique, our approach to SEN is individualized. Strategies and support mechanisms are tailored to meet the specific needs and strengths of each student.

Identification and Assessment:

  1. Early Identification: Hong Wen International employs a system for early identification of students with SEN. This involves collaboration between teachers, parents, and specialists to recognize and address potential challenges at the earliest stage.

  1. Assessment: A thorough assessment is conducted for students identified with SEN to determine their specific needs and develop appropriate support plans. This assessment may involve input from teachers, educational psychologists, and other specialists.

Provision of Support:

  1. Individualized Education Plans (IEPs): Students with SEN will have Individualized Education Plans outlining specific learning goals, strategies, and accommodations. These plans are developed collaboratively with input from teachers, parents, and relevant specialists.

  1. In-Class Support: SEN students are supported within the regular classroom environment whenever possible. Additional support, such as teaching assistants or resource teachers, may be provided to facilitate student engagement and success.

Communication and Collaboration:

  1. Parental Involvement: Parents of SEN students are valued partners in the education process. Regular communication is maintained to ensure parents are informed of their child's progress and involved in decision-making processes.

  1. Interdisciplinary Collaboration: Collaboration among teachers, specialists, and support staff is essential. Regular meetings and communication channels are established to coordinate efforts and ensure a cohesive and effective support system.

Professional Development:

Teachers and staff receive ongoing professional development opportunities to enhance their understanding of SEN and develop effective strategies for inclusive teaching. This includes training on differentiated instruction, assistive technologies, and behavior management techniques.

Review and Revision:

This SEN Policy will be regularly reviewed to ensure its effectiveness and alignment with IBDP guidelines. Feedback from students, parents, and staff will be considered in the revision process.

By adhering to this SEN Policy, Hong Wen International strives to create an inclusive and supportive learning community where all students, including those with special educational needs, can thrive academically, socially, and emotionally in accordance with the principles of the IBDP.
