Assessment Policy
Introduction:
The assessment policy of Hong Wen International School aligns with the principles and guidelines set forth by the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP). This policy is designed to ensure fairness, transparency, and rigor in the assessment process, fostering an environment that supports academic excellence and holistic development.
Principles of Assessment:
- Authenticity: Assessments should reflect authentic tasks that demonstrate students' understanding and skills. Where appropriate, assessments should connect to real-world contexts.
- Fairness: Assessments will be fair, unbiased, and free from discrimination. Accommodations will be provided for students with documented learning needs to ensure an equitable testing environment.
- Objectivity: Assessment criteria and grading processes will be clear, transparent, and objective. Teachers will use rubrics and guidelines provided by the IBDP to ensure consistency and fairness in grading.
- Assessment for Learning: Formative assessments will be employed to provide ongoing feedback, allowing students to identify areas for improvement and demonstrating a commitment to the continuous development of skills and knowledge.
Types of Assessments:
- Summative Assessments: These assessments, including examinations, will be used to evaluate students' overall understanding of a subject at the end of a course or unit.
- Internal Assessments (IA): Teachers will conduct internal assessments, including coursework and projects, to evaluate students' application of knowledge and skills. Internal assessments will contribute to the final subject grade.
- External Assessments: Students will undergo external assessments, such as written examinations, as prescribed by the IBDP. These assessments are externally moderated to ensure consistency and reliability.
Academic Integrity:
Maintaining the highest standards of academic integrity is crucial. All work submitted for assessment, including internal assessments, must be the student's own authentic work. Plagiarism and other forms of academic misconduct will be treated seriously, following the guidelines outlined in the Academic Honesty Policy.
Feedback:
- Timely Feedback: Teachers will provide timely and constructive feedback to students, supporting their learning and growth.
- Review of Assessments: Students have the right to review their assessed work and understand the feedback provided. Teachers will facilitate this process within a reasonable timeframe.
Appeals:
Students have the right to appeal assessment decisions. The appeals process will be fair, transparent, and conducted by an impartial body.
Review and Revision:
This Assessment Policy will be reviewed regularly to ensure its effectiveness and alignment with IBDP guidelines. Feedback from students, parents, and teachers will be considered in the revision process.
By adhering to this Assessment Policy, the Hong Wen International community upholds the values of the IBDP and ensures a rigorous, fair, and transparent assessment process that promotes academic excellence and personal development.
