Language Policy

Introduction:
The language policy of Hong Wen International School is designed to align with the principles and guidelines established by the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP). This policy reflects our commitment to fostering multilingualism, promoting language acquisition, and enhancing effective communication across diverse linguistic and cultural contexts.

Language of Instruction:

Primary Language of Instruction: The primary language of instruction at Hong Wen International is English. This language is used for teaching and learning in the majority of subjects. However courses in Chinese will be offered in our IB programme in Chinese A: Language and Literature and Chinese B.

Additional Languages: In addition to the primary language of instruction, students are encouraged to develop proficiency in one or more additional languages. The IBDP recognizes the importance of language acquisition as a key element in fostering international-mindedness.

Language Acquisition:

First Language: Students are required to study their first language at a level appropriate to their proficiency. This involves developing advanced language skills, including critical analysis, interpretation, and expression.

Second Language: All students are required to study a second language. This may be a language studied in the school's curriculum or the student's native language. The goal is to develop communication skills and an appreciation for linguistic diversity.

Language and Assessment:

  1. Assessment in Multiple Languages: The IBDP includes assessments in the student's first language, a second language, and possibly a third language. These assessments may include written assignments, oral examinations, and other forms of evaluation.

  1. Internal Assessments: Internal assessments will reflect the principles of authenticity and academic honesty. Students must demonstrate language proficiency in their own work, and the assessments will contribute to the overall subject grade.

Support for Language Development:

  1. Language Support Program: Hong Wen International provides a language support program to assist students in developing proficiency in the primary language of instruction and additional languages. This support is available to students with diverse linguistic backgrounds.

  1. Individualized Language Plans: Teachers work collaboratively with students to create individualized language development plans, taking into account the unique linguistic needs and strengths of each learner.

Cultural and Global Awareness:

  1. Cultural Context: Language learning is embedded in cultural contexts. Students are encouraged to explore and appreciate the cultural dimensions of the languages they study, promoting intercultural understanding.

  1. International-Mindedness: The IBDP places a strong emphasis on developing international-mindedness. Language education at Hong Wen International contributes to this goal by fostering an appreciation for global perspectives and an understanding of the role of language in communication across cultures.

Review and Revision:

This Language Policy will be regularly reviewed to ensure its alignment with IBDP guidelines and the evolving linguistic needs of our school community. Feedback from students, parents, and teachers will be considered in the revision process.

By adhering to this Language Policy, Hong Wen International aims to create a language-rich environment that promotes linguistic diversity, cultural understanding, and effective communication, in accordance with the principles of the IBDP.
