Academic Honesty Policy

Introduction:
The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) at Hong Wen International School is committed to fostering a culture of academic honesty, integrity, and ethical behavior. Upholding these principles is essential to maintaining the credibility and value of the education provided at our institution. This Academic Honesty Policy outlines the expectations, responsibilities, and consequences related to academic integrity within the IBDP.

Definition of Academic Honesty:

Academic honesty is the cornerstone of intellectual development and personal growth. It involves the acknowledgment of one's own work and the ethical use of information, ideas, and resources from others. In the context of the IBDP, academic honesty encompasses honesty in all assessments, including examinations, coursework, and extended essays.

Expectations:

  1. Independent Work: Students are expected to complete all assessments independently unless explicitly instructed otherwise by the teacher.

  1. Acknowledgment of Sources: Proper citation and acknowledgment of sources are mandatory. Plagiarism, defined as presenting someone else's work, ideas, or intellectual property as one's own, is strictly prohibited.

  1. Collaboration: Collaborative work is encouraged, but it must be within the boundaries set by teachers. Students should understand and adhere to the guidelines provided for group projects and assignments.

  1. Exam Procedures: During examinations, students must follow all instructions provided by invigilators and adhere to the established examination rules.

Responsibilities:

Students:

  • Take responsibility for their own work.
  • Seek guidance from teachers if unsure about the correct citation or use of sources.
  • Report any potential breaches of academic honesty to the appropriate authority.

Teachers:

  • Clearly communicate expectations regarding academic honesty to students.
  • Provide support and guidance on proper citation and referencing.
  • Investigate and report any suspected cases of academic dishonesty promptly.

Consequences:

  1. First Offense: A meeting with the student to discuss the violation, an educational component on academic honesty, and a written warning.

  1. Second Offense: A more formal meeting with parents, additional educational intervention, and a probationary period.

  1. Third Offense: Serious consequences, including suspension, exclusion from assessments, or, in extreme cases, expulsion from the IBDP.

Appeals:

Students have the right to appeal decisions related to academic honesty. The appeals process will be fair, transparent, and conducted by an impartial body.

Review and Revision:

This Academic Honesty Policy will be reviewed regularly to ensure its effectiveness and relevance. Feedback from students, parents, and teachers will be considered in the revision process.

By adhering to this Academic Honesty Policy, the Hong Wen International  community upholds the values of the IBDP and fosters an environment conducive to intellectual growth and ethical behavior.
